What is Smalti?

Smalti is a handmade Venetian glass, the same material that has been used for centuries in the Cathedrals of Europe.  It has an irregular surface which causes light to dance upon it and sparkle as the light source moves throughout the day.

The colors are vibrant. The pieces textural.  It is the most exquisite of all mosaic materials.

What is Gold Smalti?

Gold Smalti is handmade in Venice, Italy.  It starts with a glass base upon which a sheet of 24k gold is laid, then blanketed in crystal.  This is the same product used for centuries in churches to form halos and often complete backgrounds.

Gold Smalti is aglow, on fire when light hits the surface. In mosaic the pieces are oftentimes laid at slightly different angles to produce a shimmering effect.

Gold Smalti comes in many colors ranging from silver to gold to copper and also reds, lavenders, oranges, yellows, greens and blues.  The back side of gold smalti is often blue or green and creates a vibrant punch of color when used upside down.

What is FilatI?

Filati is smalti that has been heated and stretched into a tiny strand that can be round or flat in shape.  These strands are cut into shorter lengths and set vertically in a base to create a micro mosaic.

What is Millefiori?

Handmade in Murano Italy, strands of glass are fused to create a pattern, stretched and then cut into small cross sections.  They come in many sizes, colors and patterns, some opaque, some transparent.  The word Millefiori means Thousand Flowers.  Many pieces are flower like.
